New York is the largest direct mail market in the United States by a wide margin: about 8.3 million residents across five boroughs, more than 3.4 million households, and ZIP codes 100 through 104 covering Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. It is also the hardest city to mail well, because the housing stock is unlike anywhere else. In Manhattan, a single carrier route can be one apartment building with 600 units; in eastern Queens and Staten Island, routes look like any suburb.
That is why we treat New York as a set of very different markets. Saturation EDDM works in the single-family and small-multifamily neighborhoods of Queens, Brooklyn south of Prospect Park, the Bronx north of Fordham and all of Staten Island. EDDM in New York: route by route
The USPS EDDM tool works in every borough, but route sizes vary from under 200 addresses to over 1,000, and a route that is a single high-rise means your piece goes to every unit in that building. For restaurants and services near a cluster of towers that is exactly what you want; for a roofer it is a waste. We pull the route map with you, exclude business-only routes if you like, and show you the count before anything prints. Larger EDDM drops are entered through the Business Mail Entry Unit so there is no 5,000-per-ZIP daily cap.
Delivery times and entry
Mail for the five boroughs is processed through the Morgan facility in Manhattan and the Brooklyn and Queens processing centers, and Marketing Mail entered in the metro typically reaches New York mailboxes in three to six business days; First-Class in one to three. For time-sensitive drops we schedule entry so the mail lands Tuesday through Thursday, when response is highest.

How much does direct mail cost in New York City?
The same as anywhere else we mail: a 6×9 postcard printed and mailed as USPS Marketing Mail costs about $0.58 per piece at 5,000 pieces, and an EDDM postcard about $0.40 per piece. New York lists cost the same per record as any other city; the difference is that Manhattan lists are usually selected by building and income rather than by carrier route.
Does EDDM work in Manhattan apartment buildings?
Yes. Every unit on the selected carrier route receives the piece, including apartment buildings, because carriers deliver to each mailbox in the building. Some large buildings are their own route, so check the route map: mailing one route may mean mailing one tower.
